Overview of Walking Holidays

The walking holiday program is a series of usually moderate multi-day treks, and is really not that challenging at all. Think of it simply as a nice collection of consecutive individual day walks of moderate intensity done in easy, manageable stages over a choice of 3 – 7 days or more, depending on your enthusiasm! Each stage would typically take between 5 – 8 hours to complete. You will enjoy hiking from one mountain village to another through the enchanting Axarquian hills and countryside, and the excitement of traversing the foothills and lower – upper mountain valleys of the southern slopes of the Sierra Almijara y Sierra Tejeda. The high mountain villages of the Sierras Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park all neatly fringe the rugged southern slopes of these magnificent sierras.

Depending on the length of the itinerary you choose, you will traverse either one or two mountain ranges along a mixture of surfaced and unsurfaced mountain and forest roads, mountain trails and paths, and old mule trading routes. You will complete each stage one day at a time, working your way from village to village until you eventually complete the itinerary.

The standard of accommodation varies slightly from village to village, and is largely dependent on the location and size of the mountain locality. Nevertheless, all accommodation is clean and comfortable and of a decent and respectable standard. Some lodgings may offer additional services over others. The smaller villages and hamlets, though more quaint, quiet and rural, tend to have fewer available services and facilities; while larger villages and towns, though slightly more hectic and busy, tend to have greater availability and choice of replenishments and supplies.

For treks of a duration of five days or more, one or more rest days can be incorporated into the itinerary with the option of visiting local sites of cultural, gastronomical or historical interest. The choice is yours!

To participate on a multi-day walking holiday, a decent to good level of fitness is required together with a good level of stamina as we will be trekking over consecutive days. It is of the utmost importance to bring good, comfortable walking boots that have been broken-in, not to mention high quality socks.
